As the headline says, Sony has announced that it's ditching physical game sales in 2028. I understand why people are freaking out about it. Still, have you people seen the list of PS5 exclusives? From the looks of it, Sony doesn't care enough to justify it's own consoles existence. XBOX is basically dead and they know they won't outsell the Switch or Switch 2, from my point of view it seems they've become complacent. I'm sure they think that those of you in their ecosystem will probably stay there so they're testing the waters on how to screw people even further.

I want to clarify that I don't have any interest in the PS5 and don't own one.I did have a PS4 when it was relevant. I was impressed, but I couldn't get into it. I think my most played games on that thing were Metal Gear Solid 5, PS1 ports and the Namcot Collection series. I didn't need a PS4 for any of that. I played through games like The Last of Us and these cinematic games with overly on rails gameplay aren't for me.

I've spent more time than I'd like to admit with multiple aspects of game preservation. I consider it to be one of the most culturally important things I've ever done, in fact. Despite that, I'm not offended by Sony's decision or even surprised by it. You're no fool, and niether am I. We both know that Sony doesn't care about any of the products that release on their consoles and they certainly don't care about their customers. That's not unique to them, but most companies at least attempt to hide it. I could list several examples of Sony's pure contempt for it's playerbase, but I think the Playstation 5 in and of itself is the most obvious. They pushed the thing out, published a Spider-Man game and a few wierd little movie games, and gave up. Of the PS5 owners I know, it's a Fortnite machine.

As of July 4th, 2026, Playstation 5's library consists of over one thousand games. Of those, only 25 are exclusively playable on it. Given that the console has existed for nearly six years and probably has two or three left, I think we're going to be fine. I sincerely doubt that those twenty five games each have physical releases. However, if they do, and Sony continues this pattern, then Playstation 5's legacy is more or less secured. Mind you, this is a worst case scenario. We've got to work with the crap that's been flung at us and demand better in the future
