Exporting Your Photos

You've taken your photos, now you've gotta get them outta your camera! There are several ways to do this, all of which are relatively simple. Several of these methods require you to navigate the cameras print interface.

Game Boy Printer

Do things like they did in 98' and print those suckers out! There’s a few good reasons to do this. These tiny printouts are all over my house these days. My daughter likes having the pictures plastered on her walls, and my wife took an interest in all the weird printouts I'd made for this article. She even requested some for herself to be put in little frames she had laying around. So long as they aren’t exposed to direct sunlight, the print outs will last a while.

While printing with the Game Boy Printer, it’s important to know that you can set how dark the print is, and that you should definitely set it to be as dark as possible. Anything aside from “DARKEST” will look like crap. To do this, press start while on this screen

GB Operator

The GB Operator software knows when a Game Boy Camera is plugged into it and will allow you to dump photos into a folder. Mind you, these photos will not have any borders and are simply raw dumps of your photos in PNG format; It’s simple, really. Upon plugging your Camera into the GB Operator, click DATA, then PHOTO GALLERY. You’ll be given the option to export your photos.

If you’d like to save digital versions of your photos with frames/comments, use the GB Operator to dump your game and save file under the “DATA” TAB into the same folder. This can be done with the “Backup Game” And “Back Up Save” file option. You can’t do this with the GB Operator’s emulation software. You must dump the ROM and save file.

MGBA Emulator

Open the ROM with MGBA and click “Emulation”. At the bottom of the list, you’ll see Game Boy Printer. Open that and print as you usually would. To print comments, press start on the print screen, a thought bubble will pop up.

Retro Spy Pixel Printer Emulator

This is more or less a digital version of the Game Boy Printer. It'll allow you to print directly from you Game Boy to your computer. I'm fairly certain these guys are simply reselling an open source project, but that's none of my business and the build quality is great. This is a great tool in addition to the GB Operator. However, it's functionality can be recreated easily with MGBA. Really, it's up to you.
