Tips & Tricks

The Game Boy Camera requires you to think outside the box in order to get the most out of it. Technical limitations remove just about everything we take for granted today. I suppose that's appropriate considering the Game Boy Console in and of itself was rife with games that were made using this very philosophy. The following are some tips that will help you make the most of Game Boy Camera.
Contrast is key

Analyze your environment and use it to your advantage to get the best shots. If you want the subject of your photo stand out, make sure it contrasts directly with its backdrop. If you’re taking a picture of a white dog, do so while it’s sitting on your brown carpet. Black Cat? White wall. If you’re having trouble, use multi-colored construction paper. Cut a small piece off of each color, and put it up against various other pieces and observe it through the camera. You’ll see what I’m talking about immediately.
You can create animated content

The copy function in conjunction with Doodle is very powerful. Draw something, copy it, modify it slightly, copy that, modify that slightly, etc. Take those frames and use the Animation function to animate them. Congratulations, you’ve made a cartoon. With a capture device, there is no functional limit to how long that cartoon can be. You can also increase the frame rate slightly higher than the Animation function allows by scrolling through the Check option. Yes, I actually did this. A lot.
Game Boy Camera and OLED displays

Traditionally, taking a picture of another picture is a terrible idea. Game Boy Camera is anything but traditional though. If your phone has an OLED display, try taking a picture of one of your Gallery photos. You'll be surprised at how well they turn out. OLED displays are bright and high contrast which is exactly what the camera's sensor wants. Of course, this works best with a properly calibrated camera.
